Woo-hoo! First fresh asparagus, radishes and maple syrup batch of the year just showed up at our Saturday farmers market! The potatoes, squash and apples all winter were great but it’s always a treat to see the first garden-fresh stuff show up at the stalls – typically, ramps and radishes, followed by asparagus. Before long, the full cornucopia of tomatoes, lettuces, strawberries, blueberries, sunflowers, herbs and more, will tempt mercilessly with their dewy beauty!
Get out to your farmers market this weekend if you can. If you're new in town, check out the National Farmers Market Directory to find the ones closest to where you live. It’s a great place to meet your neighbors and catch up on all the news, too.
Besides providing easy access to fresh, nutritious food, and promoting sustainability, farmers markets stimulate local economies. They provide one of the only low-barrier entry points for beginning farmers and growers, allowing them to start small, test the market and grow their businesses.
OK, enough talk. I have to have one of these radishes with butter right now!
