When Life Gives You Roses

When the hectic, often dispiriting pace of day-to-day life gets to be a bit much, I look for small digital “vacations,” like David Shaw’s walks through the English countryside and the Sounds of the Forest site — brief retreats that remind me of the quiet beauty that’s still present in the world.

My latest escape is this incredibly soothing video from the Country Life Vlog sent to me by a library friend:

What I like best is its simplicity. There are no loud transitions and no scripted talking. Instead, we enjoy the natural sounds of life on a country homestead: roosters crowing, the snap of fresh rose blooms being harvested, hay being threshed by hand, and pancakes cooking on a griddle. I need stuff like this.

The video was recorded in the remote village of Hil, hidden away in Azerbaijan's Qusar region, against the dramatic Caucasus Mountains. A mother-and-son duo, Aziza Ramikhanova and her son Amiraslan, a professional chef, created it. Together, they have turned their everyday farm routines and heritage recipes into an art form. Watching Aziza transform fresh-picked blooms, sugar, and water into ruby-red rose jam over an open flame is remarkably therapeutic.

If your week has been heavy, take ten minutes to step out of the rush. Pour a cup of tea or a glass of rosé wine, turn the sound up to catch the natural ASMR, and watch a beautiful, age-old culinary tradition unfold.

😊  Please like, comment, and share this relaxing digital escape freely – Thanks!

I stumbled on this vlog a year ago and became enchanted with the magic of this distant farm and its life. No need to speak or read the language. The surroundings and sounds are enough.
