8 Minutes of Joy: Firefly Sanctuary

Follow adventure traveler Mike Corey into the Magic Forest near Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, Mexico, to see one of the most amazing sights of nature: the nocturnal lightshow caused by millions of fireflies at the Santuario de las Luciérnagas – the Firefly Sanctuary.

Every summer, from late June through early August, swarms of fireflies illuminate the darkened forest from approximately 8 to 9:30 pm in a mad, twinkling search for a mating partner.

“Visiting the Firefly sanctuary […] was completely unbelievable,” notes Mike. “Thousands of them and spinning and swirling around us and into the treetops. Lighting up IN SYNC with each other like a coordinated light show. It didn't feel like planet earth, it felt like I stood up too fast and was seeing stars, it felt like I stepped into fantasy.”
