It's finally here! Fresh local asparagus is back at NYC’s Greenmarkets along with the first crop of radishes, leeks and field greens – YUM! In another week or so, we’ll begin to see wild ramps, strawberries, and the first precious early season tomatoes! Farmer’s markets are shifting into full gear about now in many parts of the country.
Before the real summer hauls begin (think sweet corn, sunflowers, blueberries, cherries, jams, jellies, pies!) get to know where this year’s farmers markets are set up near where you live by checking out the National Farmers Market Directory. These are great places to enjoy the outdoors, meet your friends, and catch up on all the neighborhood news, too.
Besides providing easy access to fresh, nutritious food, and promoting sustainability, farmers markets stimulate local economies. They provide one of the only low-barrier entry points for beginning farmers and growers, allowing them to start small, test the market and grow their businesses.
Buy fresh. Buy local.
